EA recently released our first look at the Starfighter Assault gameplay (my personal favorite mode from the first Battlefront) and after experiencing the live stream gameplay broadcast, EA once again seems to deliver. However, the Starfighter Assault trailer may contain more hints to the story we will see play out than we may have realized.
At the beginning of the trailer, we are greeted with a Resurgent-class Destroyer in the Unknown Regions. The Resurgent-class destroyers were used during the First Order’s conquest of the Unknown Regions, which is interesting to say the least. Although this is just speculation, one can assume that it is possible that in order to conquer the Unknown Regions, the First Order had to have come in contact with the Chiss Ascendancy. Is it possible we may get to play out this battle either in DLC or within the main story? Also, until we know more following Star Wars Rebels Season 4, could we potentially get an appearance from Grand Admiral Thrawn himself?
During the battle that takes place around the Resurgent-class Destroyer, we are given a couple “blink and you’ll miss it” moments as we hear Poe Dameron deliver his line from The Force Awakens and in seconds he is met by a TIE Silencer. The TIE Silencer was only recently revealed as part of The Last Jedi as Kylo Ren’s personal starfighter. Whether this class of TIE fighter solely belongs to Kylo Ren or not is currently unknown, but I trust it’s appearance isn’t coincidence.
The trailer then continues backwards in time to the debris field above Endor from the point of view of Red 5 himself, Luke Skywalker. At the end of Return of the Jedi, we know Luke made it out from Death Star II to the forest moon of Endor with his father’s body, yet in this trailer we see him in the fight above Endor? It’s possible this could be a custom match of some sort, but if it is in fact part of the canon story being told throughout the game, this could be our first glimpse into the events immediately following Return of the Jedi.
The space above Ryloth, home planet to Hera Syndulla, comes into play as we transition from the Original Trilogy era to the Clone Wars. Now it’s no surprise that we will be able to experience the Clone Wars in gameplay with the Assault on Theed gameplay from the first Battlefront trailer already debuted, however it’s exciting to see a pivotal location in the Clone Wars era, with so many ties to so many exciting characters, potentially be available in the game. I would personally love to see Clone Wars era Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and maybe even some Rebels like Kanan and Hera become playable in the game.
During this scene, we get a couple of lines of dialogue from a male fighter pilot that sounds like he could possibly be Anakin and also a female fighter pilot that, at my first impression, sounded a whole lot like Ahsoka Tano. Now listening back I can admit that the resemblance isn’t quite as uncanny as in my initial excitement, but it would definitely be awesome to see Ahsoka acknowledged in more than just the animated series and playable nonetheless.
Leaving Ryloth, the trailer jumps quickly to a face-off that has been teased since the first Battlefront II trailer but we get a different perspective. We travel to Kamino, birthplace of the Clone Army, and Yoda versus Maul is even more awesome in starfighters! I loved seeing Yoda in his own fighter for the first time and I am eager to take his starfighter into battle! The gameplay of Maul’s Scimitar starfighter looks most impressive and will definitely be a force to be reckoned with.
Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on November 17, 2017 and is currently available for preorder!
